Prohibition on the Export of Cultural Assets

• Cultural assets can only be exported with permission from the Administrator of Korea Heritage Service for international cultural exchange.
• To obtain export permission, an application must be submitted to the Administrator of Korea Heritage Service at least three months in advance.
• Unauthorized export or smuggling of cultural assets without permission is punishable by law under the Cultural Heritage Protection Act, with a sentence of at least three years of imprisonment.
• Items that may be mistaken for cultural assets should also be verified (appraised) at the Cultural Heritage Appraisal Office in the airport or port at least three hours before departure.
