Aircraft Noise Unit (LdendB(A))
LdendB(A) [Day-evening-night Average Sound Level]
This is the evaluation method officially used by the FAA, which applies a weighted evaluation unit to the equivalent noise (Leq) with an additional 5 dB for the evening period (19:00–22:00) and 10 dB for the nighttime period (22:00–07:00).
- The day, evening, and nighttime weighted equivalent noise level of aircraft is calculated on a daily basis by measuring the SEL value whenever an aircraft passes, which exceeds the background noise, adding a +5 dB and +10 dB weight for the evening and nighttime periods, respectively, and averaging the cumulative SEL values.
- T : Aircraft Noise Measurement Time (= 86,400 seconds), TO : Reference time (1 second)
- i : i: Noise exposure level measured from 07:00 to 19:00. j : Noise exposure level measured from 19:00 to 22:00. k : 2Noise exposure level measured from 22:00 to 07:00.
The aircraft noise unit has been changed from the noise exposure planning level (WECPNL**) to the weighted equivalent continuous perceived noise level (LdendB(A)) in accordance with the related legal amendment (effective from January 1, 2023).
*Amendment to the “Enforcement Decree of the Noise and Vibration Control Act” and the “Enforcement Decree of the Airport Noise Prevention and Areas Assistance Act.”
** WECPNL(Weighted Equivalent Continuous Perceived Noise Level) : This is a calculation method that applies weights to the number of aircraft operations during the daytime, nighttime, and late-night periods based on the maximum noise level measured when an aircraft passes.
