Acquiring the World’s First Lithium Battery Air Transport Quality Certification
Incheon International Airport has proudly become the world’s first airport to acquire lithium battery air transport quality certification. With this achievement, Incheon International Airport has now garnered international recognition for air transport safety across a total of three sectors—having previously attained certifications in pharmaceuticals (2019) and perishables (2022)—and it is now expanding this prestigious accreditation to lithium batteries. By securing certification in the lithium battery sector, Incheon International Airport has earned the distinction of being the world’s first airport to receive lithium battery air transport quality certification as well as the only airport in the world to acquire CEIV certifications in three distinct areas: pharmaceuticals, perishables, and lithium batteries. The scale of trade related to lithium batteries has witnessed an explosive surge, driven largely by the burgeoning growth of the electric vehicle industry. In particular, from 2020 to 2022, trade has escalated from $443 million to $628 million, reflecting an impressive average annual growth rate of 19%. By acquiring the CEIV certification for lithium batteries, Incheon International Airport is internationally recognized for its stable transport capabilities, which is expected to have a positive impact on the attraction of high-value air cargo demand. Additionally, the airport is expected to solidify its position further as a competitive cargo hub in Northeast Asia.
