Achieving a Record of 190,000 Hours of Uninterrupted, Accident-Free Operation for 21 Years Since Opening
Not a Single Safety-related Accident during 190,000 Hours
The air navigation safety system provides various kinds of navigational information necessary for the safe flight of aircraft to their destinations. This system consists of facilities that guide aircraft landings using radio waves, including instrument landing system ground equipment, air traffic communication facilities supporting wireless communication (voice and data) between aircraft and ground equipment, radar facilities for detecting aircraft positions and supporting air traffic control, and airfield lighting facilities that use lights to identify and guide runways and taxiways. Currently, Incheon International Airport operates a total of 50 types of air navigation safety systems, providing uninterrupted air navigation safety services for 190,000 hours since the airport’s opening on March 29, 2001 without a single safety-related incident.

First in Asia to Obtain the Highest Runway Operating Grade (CAT-III, RVR 75 m)
Allows Safe Aircraft Landings Even in Low-Visibility Conditions
In 2003, Incheon International Airport became the first in Asia to obtain the highest runway operating grade (CAT-III, landing visibility minimum RVR 100 m / takeoff visibility minimum RVR 175 m). Currently, all four runways are operated at CAT-III (RVR 75 m) grade. This means that aircraft can land safely even in low-visibility conditions with runway visibility range of as short as 75 meters.

Establishment of an Integrated Safety Management System for Comprehensive Safety Management
Safety Management in Collaboration with Airlines, Ground Handling Companies, and Related Agencies
Incheon International Airport operates a Safety Management System (SMS) to systematize proactive, integrated safety management activities. SMS is integrated and managed as part of the organization’s management system, encompassing the organization’s structure, available resources, employee responsibilities, authority/tasks, decision-making processes, and management procedures. Three key indicators are Aviation Safety Incidents, ground accidents, and airfield facility functional accidents. Aviation safety incidents refer to cases where an aircraft collides with equipment, vehicles, or another aircraft, whereas ground accidents refer to collisions involving vehicles and equipment within restricted areas; airfield facility functional incidents mean circumstances wherein the inadequate management of airport movement areas causes disruptions in aircraft operations or the operation of airfield lighting facilities is suspended. To achieve these three aviation safety goals, Incheon International Airport is entirely committed to overall safety management in collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, and related agencies.
