Terminal 2, which was the key facility of the phase 3 construction, was built in the northern area of the airport for separate operation. The feasibility of the facility’s location was evaluated through countless reviews and discussions as well as expert consultation from International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in order to proceed with the project.

Terminal 2 has a total floor area of 387,000m2 (38.7 ha), which is about 77% of that of Terminal 1, and has two underground and five above-ground floors. Improvements and reinforcement were made on the issues of the existing terminal to build a more convenient and pleasant high-tech terminal. The terminal constructed to the scale of 460m (0.3 mile) in length and 880m (0.6 mile) in width, using 323,000m2 (32.3 ha) of concrete, 72,000 tons of steel frame, and 12,000 units of precast concrete.

The terminal was designed to form the shape of a phoenix upon completion of the phase 4 construction and embodies Incheon International Airport’s brand identity that combines Korea’s traditional culture and its modern creative culture through the concepts of green airport (airport that breathes with nature), eco airport (sustainable and eco-friendly airport), and smart airport (airport made safer and more convenient through advanced technology).

With completion of Terminal 2 which has an annual passenger capacity of 18 mil., Incheon International Airport took its first step as a mega-size airport that can accommodate 72 mil PAX annually.
