What if there is heavy rain on the day of your trip? 😥
You might be worried whether your flight will take off safely or if there will be cancellations.
When it comes to takeoffs and landings, aircraft are more affected by wind speed than by rainfall.
If it is rainy but the wind is light, takeoff and landing can proceed without serious issues.
However, there is a higher risk of cancellations in following situations:
🌧️ When it rains at a rate of 30mm per hour or more
🌪️ When strong winds or wind shear occur
❄️ When a heavy snowfall advisory is issued
* Wind shear: A type of turbulence where the wind direction or speed changes suddenly
Following the aviation weather alert standards, if any of these conditions exceed the specified thresholds, flight delays and cancellations can be occured.
For more details, please refer the table below.
✅ Aviation Weather Alert Standards
Type | Criteria |
Typhoon | When strong winds and heavy rain from a typhoon are expected to reach alert levels |
Thunderstorm | When thunderstorms are occurring or expected |
Heavy Snow | When 3cm or more of snow is observed or expected to accumulate in 24 hours |
Strong Wind | When the average wind speed over 10 minutes is expected to exceed 25 knots or the maximum gust exceeds 35 knots |
Heavy Rain | When either 30mm or more of rain is expected in one hour or 50mm or more in three hours |
Cloud Height | When conditions fall below agreed standards among airport meteorological offices, air traffic services, and aircraft operators |
Low Visibility | |
Wind Shear | When wind shear is expected to affect aircraft approaching or departing between 1,600ft (500m) and the runway surface |
* Please note that operating conditions can vary by aircraft type or airline.
